Comparing methods to prevent chemotherapy-induced alopecia

Alopecia is a common and distressing side effect of chemotherapy treatment. The condition is partially preventable by cooling the scalp prior to chemotherapy administration. The aim of this study was to compare the acceptability and efficacy of a new cooling cap called Chemocap with a home made scalp cooling system called gel pack. The results demonstrate no difference in efficacy between the systems in 170 women receiving chemotherapy containing epirubicin or doxorubicin, but a greater acceptability of Chemocap due to better fit and comfort, as well as ease of use and application.
