This article describes the process of developing and implementing nursing grand rounds to support clinical learning in a regional cancer centre.

Grand rounds are used routinely in the medical profession as a clinical education technique, however, little is known about their role in nursing. Ten nursing grand rounds were held between January 2014 and November 2015 and evaluated using a purpose-designed questionnaire. Of participants, 87% (n=109) agreed they had learned something new which could be applied to practice. Staff benefited from having an opportunity to hear about relevant areas of practice and new developments in oncology.

The authors’ experience of using nursing grand rounds has demonstrated that it can be an effective way of helping clinical staff to learn in an acute environment and it encourages shared learning across all levels of nursing staff.
