Men diagnosed with localised prostate cancer often have a choice about treatment. This ambiguity lends itself to a shared decision-making process. Engagement in shared decision making, and provision of quality information, is essential to this process. Healthcare professionals play an integral role in promoting shared decision making, ensuring men receive the quality information required.

This literature review identifies the challenges faced by healthcare professionals in meeting the information needs of men with prostate cancer, which have a negative effect on the decision-making process. Healthcare professionals can address these challenges by improving communication, encouraging shared decision making and providing more individualised information. It identifies the need for healthcare professionals to consider such findings when attempting to enhance participation.
