How play specialists can reduce use of anaesthesia during radiotherapy

Radiotherapy practice is complex and daunting for children. With the support of a health play specialist, children are able to have their treatment without the use of a general anaesthetic. Children are taught about the radiotherapy treatment process and prepared for each step of the treatment pathway. Existing fears are worked through and eliminated, and trust and rapport is built between the child and the health play specialist.

Treatment that does not involve the use of a general anaesthetic is not only better for children’s wellbeing and daily routines, but also more cost effective for NHS trusts.
