Working with anxiety in cancer: psycho-oncological care

The Cancer Plan has highlighted the importance of psychological support in cancer care and the importance of integrative psychological support services. (DoH 2000). Yet there is overwhelming evidence from the Kings Fund Report on head and neck cancer care that patients consistently felt that psychosocial issues were not addressed by professionals (Edwards 1997). This paper demonstrates how collaborative practice between mental health and cancer nurses can significantly improve patient care. Specifically, it examines the use of cognitive therapy in head and neck cancer rehabilitation.
