<p>Autoimmune disorders affect people of all ages, ethnicity, social class and gender. The authors briefly review the normal immune response and consider how this might break down, resulting in autoimmune disorders. Susceptibility of individuals to such disorders is discussed and examples of specific conditions are outlined.</p>
