<p>The Computers in Teaching Initiative (CTI) started in 1984. In those early days, the role was more developmental than that of today. In 1989, a revised CTI structure was implemented by the four Higher Education Funding Councils of Wales, Scotland, Northern Ireland and England. Each Centre set up following the 1989 proposal, was based within a subject specialism, for example law, geography, economics, library and information studies, medicine. In 1994, a tender for a five year contract, renewable each year, was sent out for a new Centre, that of Nursing and Midwifery.</p>
