Enteral feeding for the critically ill patient

In critical care, the most important role of the nurse is establishing feeding - assessing the patient’s nutritional status, encouraging the patient to eat where possible and recording success, or lack of it. However, nurses are often inadequately prepared for their role in the administration of enteral nutrition (Holmes 1986). They may inappropriately withhold or discontinue enteral feeding in the critically ill patient.
