<p>Good communication with patients is vital. A national audit reported that written information for patients was of poor quality (Audit Commission 1993): this was followed by a number of interrelating studies reinforcing aspects of the report. This literature review has identified sufficient evidence to influence a change in practice. A protocol for the provision of written patient information is required, and this has been developed.</p>
