<p>This article outlines the taught learning disability component in the common foundation programme provided at one school of nursing in a large university. The taught component is designed to promote knowledge, skills and attitudes that will make effective care delivery easier for this potentially vulnerable group of patients. The health needs of people with learning disabilities are outlined and contemporary barriers to accessing primary and secondary healthcare settings considered. The content and method of delivery of the learning disabilities component of the common foundation programme is outlined along with recommendations for future development. It is hoped that the content of this article will stimulate debate about the most appropriate content and format for pre-registration learning disability education in the common foundation programme.</p>
