<p>This article examines the problems associated with recruiting nurses trained in intensive care. It discusses the solutions found at a large district general hospital intensive care unit (ICU). Nurses were employed as D grades and offered an intense training programme by the trust in an attempt to train its own intensive care nurses. This, along with early promotion opportunities, could provide a solution to recruitment problems in the specialty.</p>
