<p>The development of a support nurse system for the care of bereaved relatives in an accident and emergency department is described. An audit of the care received by 86 groups of relatives revealed that the system was providing much needed support, although refinement was required in certain areas. The particular needs of parents whose infant has died, and the demands the system places on the support nurses, are discussed.</p>
