<p> Aims and intended learning outcomes </p> <p>The aim of this article is not to explain the decision-making process but to discuss how decision making can be influenced. To illustrate this, the article will focus on three particular influencing factors that are relevant to all nurses: the use of evidence, the patient's perspective and the nurse as a reflective practitioner.</p> <p>After reading this article, the nurse should be able to:</p> ■ <p>Discuss decision making in relation to the impact of evidence-based practice, the patient’s perspective and reflective practice</p> ■ <p>Reflect on his or her decision making in the light of the issues raised in the article and identify personal knowledge and skill needs</p> ■ <p>Based on this reflection, set an action plan to effect the necessary change in his or her practice.</p>
