<p> Aim and intended learning outcomes </p> <p>The aim of this article is to explore the nurse’s role in the care and rehabilitation of patients who have had a stroke. After reading the article, the nurse will be able to:</p> ■ <p>Express his or her knowledge and understanding of the principles of nursing care in acute stroke</p> ■ <p>Explore the common physical, psychological and social problems of stroke</p> ■ <p>Explain the reasons for planned interventions</p> ■ <p>Demonstrate the ways in which communication can be facilitated in the dysphasic patient</p> ■ <p>Review the contribution made by the various members of the interdisciplinary team</p> ■ <p>Discuss the nurse's contribution to the rehabilitation of stroke patients.</p>
