Higher public sector pay shows ‘no evidence’ of better retention

Institute for Fiscal Studies research finds higher pay for nurses and other public sector workers in Scotland compared with the UK as a whole does not boost staff retention, even suggesting retention has fallen relative to England. The institute says the Scottish Government should evaluate its pay policy and ‘consider targeting pay rises strategically’, focusing on occupations with the most acute recruitment and retention challenges. The RCN says fair pay is vital in retaining and recruiting nursing staff, and more needs to be done to tackle the workforce crisis.
