Patient dies after nurses’ deterioration concerns not acted on
Coroner finds that Philip Unwin’s death due to sepsis occurred after medical team’s failure to respond to nurses’ concerns that the patient was deteriorating while awaiting assessment. Mr Unwin waited more than 13 hours in the ED before his transfer to intensive care was initiated. The coroner’s report also raises concerns about inadequate nurse staffing levels in the emergency department at Royal Stoke University Hospital, which do not meet Royal College of Emergency Medicine guidelines of one registered nurse per patient in ED resusciation areas.
