Senior nurses to lead trust bid to improve care of deteriorating patients

A team of 22 nurses in band 6-8a roles will form an acute response team set up following criticism by a coroner of an NHS trust’s care for a young women who died of sepsis. North Bristol NHS Trust’s chief nursing officer said the 24/7 service would support ward teams, offer outreach support for step-down of ICU patients and provide training and advice on managing conditions such as sepsis and hyperkalaemia. The coroner at the inquest into the death of student Madeleine Lawrence at Southmead Hospital, Bristol, in 2022 said observations were missed and staff failed to act on NEWS scores that indicated deterioration. Ms Lawrence had developed sepsis in intensive care
