University halts nursing school closure plan – but cuts numbers

Cardiff University has paused plans to close its top-performing nursing school, and instead announced proposals to reduce its nursing student intake. This will also mean planned staff redundancies across all of its departments reduce from 400 to 286. Nursing programmes will continue, and the focus will be on student experience and course restructuring, staff at the university were told. The Royal College of Nursing welcomed the decision not to close the school, but criticised the initial plans and delay in changing them, also warning that there will be fewer graduates amid growing NHS staff shortages in Wales.
