A large number of people in the UK are armed forces veterans. When armed forces personnel transition to civilian life, they often face barriers to seeking and accessing healthcare. In 2015, the charity Help for Heroes established the Veterans Clinical Service, which aimed to provide holistic support to veterans in the community. The nurses and occupational therapists on the team use a person-centred approach to support veterans with physical health issues such as pain and musculoskeletal conditions.

The team comprises experienced healthcare professionals who use their knowledge of veteran health and links with other organisations to help veterans access the right care and navigate care pathways. Veterans are also offered access to recovery services via Help for Heroes, including psychological therapy and Recovery College courses. The Veterans Clinical Service can help veterans avoid a deterioration in their conditions while they wait for NHS treatment, which increases the likelihood of positive health outcomes in the long term.
