Putting the family at the centre of dementia care
Alongside growing longevity there has been an increase in the prevalence and incidence of chronic and debilitating conditions such as dementia, which in turn has increased demands on long-term care (Prince et al 2013). This has challenged healthcare systems and they have intensified efforts to contain costs. More responsibility for dementia care and assistance has been shifted into the community. This article offers a reflection on the relevance of considering the entire family unit in dementia care taking an inclusive and positive approach. It outlines the impact that dementia can have on the family unit and on advanced nurse roles in primary care. Strategies are suggested to enhance the adoption of an approach that strengthens the family system.
