<p>This article describes how problems concerning the prevention and management of the use of restraint are being addressed in the joint learning disabilities service in Sheffield.</p> <p>Appropriate policy and practical guidance are crucial to ensure the safety and uphold the human rights of clients, their families, staff and others who are involved. Sheffield’s Alternatives to Restraint project has already produced positive outcomes and it is hoped that this report will give workers elsewhere some ideas to explore and encourage them to share examples of good practice.</p>
