Increasing access to cancer screening programmes

Uptake of cancer screening by people with learning disabilities in England is poor. Data were collected using a short online questionnaire to estimate awareness of cancer screening programmes among community learning disability nurses, doctors and health facilitation nurses in Birmingham Community Healthcare NHS Trust. Knowledge of cancer screening was limited and few people had been offered formal training in this area. More needs to be done, including increased training, to raise awareness of cancer screening issues on a local and national level to improve and promote the health of people with learning disabilities.
