Clinical
person centred approaches to professional education

Person centred planning (PCP) has gained momentum in English learning disability services in recent years, following the release of the Valuing People White Paper and its associated targets (Department of Health (DH) 2001). People need appropriate training to deliver PCP. ‘Breadth training’ refers to giving an overview of PCP and its underlying principles. It is intended for ‘the masses’ – that is, people with a learning disability, family carers, professionals, and members of the wider public. ‘Depth training’ is more intense, and equips people to act as PCP facilitators.
