Teaching vulnerable people to keep safe from crime

The media has recently reported high-profile cases of people with a learning disability being taken advantage of or victimised by people they know or consider friends. This has been dubbed ‘mate crime’ (Williams 2010) and is an area where research and resources are lacking.

This study outlines the development, delivery and evaluation of a small-scale pilot group intervention related to keeping people with a learning disability safe. Group members reported finding the group helpful and enjoyable and said it improved their safety. It was, however, hard to draw strong conclusions. The study is a starting point and more work needs to take place.
