Reflective practice is seen as an important skill to develop because it enables a nurse to become self-aware and provide the best possible patient care.

This article describes how an incident during the administration of an injection caused the author to examine critically the events that occurred and their effect on patient and practitioner, and to learn from them. It is argued that reflecting on practice in this way enables nurses to develop professionally and personally and, ultimately, results in a higher standard of care.
